Canadians Rock Out for Obama

So the CBC has asked Canadians to nominate songs to celebrate the historic election of Barrack Obama. One of the songs on the list?

Rufus Wainwright - “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk”

…Wow… Nice, Canadians. Really, really… wow…

ANYWAYZ, “God is an American” by Jean-Pierre Ferland, which is way less offensive (to me, anyway), also made the list. Unfortunately all that could be found of it on Youtube was a really really really really really amazingly bad remix so I thought it best just to avoid the subject all together. Clearly I’ve failed.

…”Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk”?… Really, Canada?

…Wow…

Nothing to do with the lyrics, I suspect. Although I could be wrong. I haven’t read them.
I’m pretty sure it has more to do with the title.

    really?
I first hypothesize that there was something related to the title, then I immediately told myself “naaahh.. it would be so stupid. and gross. and racist”.

the song is beautiful, Rufus is one of my heroes. For some reason i can’t think of canadians as racist. I know a few very well and they all seem pretty genuine and nice. Been there last summer (Vancouver) and loved it. Loved how people are laid back tolerant and… (i’m out of adjectives here but i think this one fits perfect) nice!
Is the racist interpretation correct? Are we 100% positive about it? I think joe gave the right interpretation with the image of Obama smoking a fag ;-)

it’s easy if you don’t live in canada to not think of canadians as racist. i certainly didn’t before i moved here. canadians are just as racist as everybody else is though, just in their own canadian way. this means that canadians also do not think they are racist. in a country with so few racial minorities, however, i think it is difficult not to be. even if you’re doing it in a goofy canadian way as opposed to an “i’m going to lynch you” american way.*
so yes, i think it’s the cigarettes AND the chocolate milk that are referring to obama. and i do think it’s a bit in poor taste.
*i apologize for this gross over-generalization of american racism. it’s just that i’m canadian so i can’t help myself.
