Thank God it’s dEUS!
I hope you know who dEUS are, othewise.. I mean.. what the hell are you doing here, on PTBJ, if you don’t know (and love) them?
Just never forget, you faithless iPod worshippers (shame on you! shhhhame on you!!), that you can’t define yourself a 90s indie nerd unless you listened to “Worst Case Scenario” (1994) a thousand times at least: in my “10 singles I’m going to bring in the coffin with me” list (never know who’s the DJ in the Hereafter..) you’ll find their “Suds & Soda” for sure.
Anyway.. I was left a bit disappointed by their 2005 return after a 6 year hiatus. I demanded neither “Worst Case Scenario”’s indie pop fury, nor “In a bar, under the sea”’s dense and indescribable mood (you get pure pop, infectious basslines, sneaky violins, noise, ballads, piano driven parts..). It would have been nonsense asking for a remake.
But “Pocket Revolution” (2005) was too.. flat, in my opinion (a good album, however).
Things seem to get better in 2008, when they released “Vantage Point” (2008): while waiting to downl.. buy it, I’ve been delighting my ears already with the singles taken from it: “The Architect”, “Slow” and “Eternal Woman”: ok.. they won’t be masterpieces, but they somehow remind me of the atmospheres in the “Ideal crash” album (1999). And this is a good news.
As a token of gratitude to their italian fans’ everlasting love, maybe, the story in “Eternal woman” video takes place in a fictional radio station in Bergamo, in the north of Italy. Subtitles and spoken parts are all in Italian. And the brigittebardot-esque girl with long dark hair is one of the worst young italian actress of the last ten years.
(Uh.. forgetting.. they’re Belgian. And they’re not the only awesome band from there. I’ll show you more in a future post)
Enjoy

Who’s dEUS?
p.s. I do not now nor ever will claim to be a 90s nerd. I’d better get Luke and Will to do some updates soon, otherwise it’s just going to be me vs. the 90s tribute twins.

actually, i think i know maybe 4 people total that listens to dEUS. it’s way too artsy for most indie rock fans, at least it was 10-15 years ago. i really have no idea how big they got outside of europe.

Did they get big outside of Europe?
I suppose I wouldn’t know anyway, seeing as 10-15 years ago I as 6-10 years old and not very up on things.

ah ah ah!!
“the 90s tribute twins”!.. I adore you, Joc.
However.. I’ll try to be more.. contemporary, starting from the next post.
(for the record.. between 6 and 10 I was into Alphaville, Duran Duran, Dead or Alive, Howard Jones.. and I could sing by heart every opening song / signature tune of every Japanese cartoon broadcasted on TV. like any other child in Italy)
