The problem with non-Anglophones. Part one: the Hallelujah method
“It’s not what, good girls do
not how they should behave
My head gets so confused
Hard to obey”
Know why I like Katy Perry’s “I kissed a girl” (apart from the fake lesbo thing, obviously)?
It’s the same reason I love Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars“, Garbage’s “Stupid Girl“, Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” or.. the whole Depeche Mode’s discography!
It’s because.. I get all the lyrics! (well.. not all, actually.. let’s say a good 90%)
Oooohh.. yesss! No need to search the net for ‘em. I just need to pay a little more attention while listening to the song and.. bingo! You should see me singing Britney’s “Oops! I did it again“, oh.. I insist you should, dear readers.
That’s the problem with non-Anglophones like me: we often have to content ourselves to appreciate a song by its melody and by its sound only, and nothing else. If we are rrreal fan of a band, we push ourselves to learn all the lyrics of their entire production by heart (that’s what I’ve done with The Cure or PJ Harvey).
I don’t have the faintest idea of what Busta Rhymes‘ or Missy Elliot’s lyrics are about, and..
Anthony Kiedis, believe me, you’d be undoubtedly cool even if you sang more clearly! I mean.. (almost) everyone here in Italy could sing “Under the bridge” perfectly, but.. I had been humming “we, beards of shave, so lonely, have youuu” for years, before reading the correct words of “Scar Tissue“.
I think REM’s “Losing my religion” can sum up the situation: if you happen to stumble upon a campfire on the beach here in Italy, you’ll hear dis-tinc-tive-ly “every whisper“, “my confession“, “oh no I said too much“, “that was just a dream“, “that’s me in the corner” and NOTHING ELSE! steadily emerging from a long and shy continuous murmuring sound.
That’s what happens in church. More or less. Uh.. whatever!..

your argument is flawed, cos if you can hear what katy perry is singing then you know it’s CRAP!
those are my 5 cents.

Welcome back, Jenny!
Waiting to read and see about your trip to USA.
Talking about the post.. no, you can’t even imagine how we, non anglophones, feel.. mm.. fulfilled(?) when we get the lyrics (and thus the meaning) of a song just by hearing it.
This sense of “power”, of satisfaction, SOMETIMES goes beyond issues about crap lyrics, to me.
Uh.. I have to go, now.. I feel the compulsory need to go and ask a shop assistant.. for a cherry chapstick.
