Album Review: Indiecater Volume One
So Kevin, my fellow music nerd over at mp3hugger, had this brilliant idea. “I know!” he said, “I’m going to create a compilation album of ten songs from ten really great unreleased artists who aren’t getting the attention they deserve!” So create Kevin did, and the result is Indiecater Volume One, a veritable gold-mine of exciting music nobody knows about.
Here’s the track-by-track rundown:
1. It’s Alright - Burning Codes
I’ve listened to this song approximately 4,000 times more than the others. It’s really delightfully simple and beautifully crafted. Just a lovely song.
2. Astronaut - Slushco
I really love indie-pop. And since Of Montreal sucks now, I’m glad someone else is doing something similar to what they used to do.
3. Rockfield Symphony - Storkboy Choons
This song reminds me of someone having a killer dance party with the voices in their head. And explosions of orange, much like their Myspace page.
4. Cockroaches - The E.L.F.
Wow I love this song. I don’t even want to talk about it. Just go listen to it on his Myspace.
5. Packed the Car - Foreign Slippers
Crooning country-esque girl rock. Not my favourite thing, but she does it very well and has an incredible voice.
6. You Remind Me of Me - Beaten Awake
This song is summer, I think. When it’s kind of rainy and not quite going the way you expected. That’s not an insult at all. “You Remind Me of Me” is pretty great.
7. (Untitled) - Call to Mind
Well… this is more one of those songs I think people who aren’t me would really like. Maybe Radiohead fans. They would probably like this song… Or people who like Explosions in the Sky.
8. We’ve Been Waiting for You - Empty Rooms
This one is raaaaaaad. It’s one of those perfect nighttime driving songs. You know what I’m talking about?
9. Share - Cymbals Eat Guitars
This song is just cool. Like, it’s so cool. It’s also available on the downloads page. Pretending to be Japanese is so cool.
10. Dumbshow (Director’s Cut) - Michael Knight
For a minute, this song reminded me of Jens Lekman, which was bad. Then it stopped, which was good. It’s sort of reminiscent of the Little Miss Sunshine soundtrack, but better. Nice job, Mike.
So there you have it. Not a bad collection of tunes at all. It’s only like $5.00 (that is an estimate. The price is in Euros, and I can’t be bothered to look up the exchange rate) and all the proceeds go to these fine deserving artists. So buy this album and do some good in the world.
