The bittersweet charm of myspace, to me.
Some days ago I found a message in my myspace box, sent by a guy called “S.”.
It went like this: “I think it’s you, Sergio, the person behind sofarevolutions (my myspace profile). I still jealously keep a copy of a demo of your band, the one with the ruby red cover. Don’t know if you remember me..” and went on retrieving songs, situations, flavours from a common past of “wannabe indie somethings in Cagliari, Sardinia”.
The “S.” stands for Stefano, a brilliant guitarist (and a very nice person indeed) who played in the 90s in a totally rad Sardinian band named “Cue Lie”; I often went to see them live, as well as he went to see my band.
A sudden yet pleasing dive back in the past, again.
I think this is the bittersweet charm of myspace, to me at least: it’s nice to realize that someone, somehow, still keeps some memories about something you did in the past.. so sweet and warm sensation, yes.. ’til you realize HOW far that past is.
The most.. er.. moving passage in his message goes “last time I saw you was at a J Mascis’ solo gig..”.
Yes, (late) 80s / 90s indie legend J Mascis, leader of seminal band Dinosaur Jr, some years ago went to play a solo gig in the 60.000 inhabitants dead town where I lived back then (the one and only decent concert in its entire history, serious)
A fattened, grey, confused, dull, almost sad version of Mascis. Yet so kind. I asked him his autograph, he uttered something resembling the word “BRRMBLTGRBRBL”, and signed me a copy of “I don’t think so” cd single booklet.
I listened to their 2007 comeback album, “Beyond”: surprisingly good, and Mascis appears.. regenerated.
But I do prefer to remember them this way:
Dinosaur Jr - Get Me (1993)
Uh.. forgetting..
Some years ago Stefano moved to London, where he still lives and works; he now plays in an intriguing band called Tacoma. Go and take a peek.
