Overrated Band of the Day: Kimya Dawson

I suppose “band” is a strong word for a woman with a guitar, but the overrated part, at least, is accurate. Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while (my mom), will remember that I may, in a moment of exceptionally poor judgement, have expressed an opinion of Kimya Dawson that may or may not have been positive. For this I apologize. Though, in my defense, it was February in Vancouver and I hadn’t seen the sun in about three months. That tends to lead to bad decisions, like listening to the Juno soundtrack, which has to be the worst record ever released, except possibly for everything by Hanson. Oh, and Night Falls Over Kortedala.

Seriously, why would a kick-ass movie about a girl who listens to Iggy & The Stooges come with a soundtrack filled with songs so juvenile they’re not even suitable for children? It’s an insult to Sonic Youth and Mott the Hoople to include them with such garbage. What’s stranger, though, is that everyone bought it. I mean yes, Juno was a really good movie. Teenage female protagonist with actual character depth, yada yada yada…

Kimya Dawson

But come on, guys. That doesn’t mean you have to like the damn soundtrack. And it certainly doesn’t mean you have to like Kimya Dawson, who has nothing going for her other than her ability to rhyme. I mean, she named her baby “Panda.” Does that indicate to you that she’s all there? I’m inclined to think, actually, that she has some sort of mental deficiency, but I won’t say which for fear of offending anyone with said deficiency. I certainly wouldn’t want to be lumped in a group with Kimya Dawson.

I propose we gather up every copy of the Juno Soundtrack (starting with my sister’s) and disco-demolition style burn them in the middle of a sporting event. Who’s with me?

I agree with Joc, this chick totally blows. she sucks at singing and she is always off key. It’s not cute or quirky, shes just annoying. I love Joc!!!!!!!

    Thanks for the support, Lisa.

You have no idea how many times my friend has put on the Juno soundtrack and tried to get me to like it. And how many times I then punched her in the face.

Fuck you Jocelyn. Mmm Bop is a great track, I listen to it a number of times at work just to pick up the energy in the room.

And in regards to the Juno soundtrack, The Kinks are on there. Therefore the soundtrack is NOT terrible because The Kinks can make up for any shitty song on any album.

And if you hate on the Kinks I’m going to fly back to Vancouver and shove my trendy sneaker in your face.

(I didn’t mean that ‘Fuck you’ at the beginning, like Asia said, it was the heat of the moment.)

I forgot the Kinks were on there. I could never hate on the Kinks.
