RIP: Bands who are no longer with us… PART TWO!
As you may have noticed, we have a guest blogger in our midst. I don’t know who cares about global politics when Jens Lekman is still at large, but I guess some people just don’t have their priorities straight.
There will be more guest updates in the near future, and maybe even some more bloggers added to the roster. I know, I know, “But, Jocelyn! You are the best blogger ever! Why would we want to read what anyone else has to say?” The answer is plain, gentle readers. You wouldn’t.
Anywayz, on to the update. Those of you who have been with us for some time may remember a post back in the early days of this blog (December) where I discussed the tragedy that is the death of a great band. As I like to dwell, I thought we could explore this subject even further. So, with no more delay, I bring you… RIP: Bands who are no longer with us… PART TWO!

While in high school in the suburbs of Chicago, I expressed my bad-ass, rebellious nature by being something of a gay groupie. As a result, I ended up at a Bitch and Animal concert at Northern Illinois University. It was here that I learned to refer to men as “scrotum-toters”, learned to refer to myself as a “recovering Catholic”, and learned the greatest/most ridiculous song of all time, “Pussy Manifesto.”
That’s right, “Pussy Manifesto.” Bitch and Animal were SO COOL. With songs like “Best Cock on the Block” (about a lady with a dildo, of course), and “Ganja” (I could never figure out what that one was about…), Bitch and Animal have earned their place as my favourite bunch of angry lesbian feminists. Their breakup in 2004, while amiable, was disastrous for all of us wannabe-gays of the world, but their memory lives on in my hairy, hairy legs.
…Also they’re still making music, just not together. Whatever. It’s not as good.
I suppose one can’t expect longevity from a band who owes most of their success to a plug in High Fidelity, but one can’t help being disappointed that said band is no longer around. During a recent bout of the flu, I downloaded every song I could find by The Beta Band (legally, I swear), and I didn’t hear one song I didn’t like. I know it doesn’t seem that way, but I can be pretty judgmental, so for me to not not like something is kind of a big deal.
Thus, The Beta Band are kind of a big deal. They were Hot Chip before Hot Chip was Hot Chip, only they did it way better. Their lyrics were clever, their music was phenomenal, The Three EP’s is like the best album ever… it’s hard not to be sad they’re gone. Luckily, though, Robin Jones and John Maclean have stayed together for the sake of the kids and formed The Aliens, who are almost as sweet as The Beta Band. Almost.
The Blood Brothers… Again!
…Just kidding. I’m over it.
That’s all I’ve got, actually. Everyone else who’s broken up sucks.

the cooper temple clause?
don’t know if they were somehow “famous”, there in Usa / Canada.. (here in Italy absolutely not, obviously..).
born in.. 98? they split in 2007.
3 albums. the second’s my favourite: “Kick Up The Fire, And Let The Flames Break Loose”. nothing revolutionary, but “blind pilots” is one of my favourite songs ever. and.. yes!.. I do like the relationship / plane metaphore!
“I can’t pretend that I could be
The man you said you saw in me
But hang around and I’ll try and land this thing”
(go and see the video on youtube!! go! now!!!)
and.. if we can go backwards in time.. definitely The Afghan Whigs (dead in 2001).
to me, one of the most underrated bands (with one of the most underrated singer / songwriter) of the ’90s.
careless and hasty (oooohh.. it’s the first time I use this intriguing adjective..) press and media filed them under “another 90’s angst grungy alt band on subpop who can boast a video directed by anton corbijn”.
I jealously still take care of a vinyl copy of “gentlemen” (1993), their most.. uhm.. “commercial” album, but probably their best crafted one.
I still mourn the death of more two or.. ten bands, but.. I’m feeling a bit “pre-historic”, so I think I stop here.
(oh my.. it took almost an hour to me to write all this.. checking every word on the dictionary..)

You know, I’ve never heard of either of these bands, but I’ll certainly be checking them out. There’s really nothing like the exquisite pain of loving a band that no longer exists.

I heart “pussy manifesto.”
